Key Features of Steelcase Think

Smart Capabilities

The Think is smart enough to understand how you sit and adjust itself intuitively, and uses automatic ergonomic support to sense what your body needs for all-day sitting.

Using Integrated LiveBack Technology, the Think responds to your movements with back flexors and dual-energy lumbar support to conform to your body as you change postures.

If you need a chair that's simple to understand and use, the Think is perfect for you. It can anticipate your postures and gives you the freedom to customize your chair and recline settings with few adjustments.

When it was first introduced, The Think set an industry standard. It was the first product on the planet to receive Cradle-to-Cradle certification and the first to receive e3 Level certification under BIFMA testing standards.

The redesigned Think is even more sustainable than the original model. Recycled materials make up roughly a third of its weight, and it can be disassembled in five minutes or less for easy recycling at the end of its life.

Pros of Steelcase Think

With its ergonomic features, the Think provides unmatched comfort. The seat cushion's adaptive bolstering conforms to your shape to provide dynamic, continuous support as you switch postures throughout the day.

The Think also has a backrest that can be upholstered with 3D knit material. This material has the breathability of mesh and adds an extra layer of comfort without avoiding pressure points or unsupported zones.

Think offers a minimal number of adjustments and has simple controls that are easy to find, understand and use, to support every user who sits for a living:

  • Seat Depth –The seat depth adjustment positions the seat forward or backward for long-term comfort.
  • Adjustable Arms – For personalized arm support, the arms move in four directions: height, width, pivot, and depth.
  • Flexible Seat Edge – The flexible seat edge flexes down to relieve pressure on the back of the legs.
  • Dual-Energy Lumbar – The dual-energy lumbar uses embedded spring energy within a 4-inch adjustment range to provide users with responsive lumbar support as they change postures.
  • Comfort Dial – The comfort dial quickly adjusts to one of four comfort settings: upright back lock, mid-stop recline, full recline with weight-activated tension, and full recline with a 20% boost weight-activated tension.
  • Weight-Activated Mechanism –Think’s adaptive weight-activated mechanism moves as fluidly as your body does. It applies backrest tension based on the weight of the person sitting in the chair. The arms are also attached to the mechanism so users can maintain forearm support as they type and recline.
  • Integrated LiveBack System – The Integrated LiveBack System combines a flexible back frame with linked flexors and the dual-energy lumbar to sense back movement and respond to user needs. It is also designed to flex and support a wide range of user postures.

Build Quality

Despite its lightweight frame, the Think is extremely durable. It's made out of high-quality, sustainable materials and is designed for users weighing up to 400 pounds

According to BIFMA testing standards, at least 20 tests are required for task seating. However, Steelcase performs more than 8 additional tests at higher weight capacities to exceed industry standards.

Aesthetic Appeal

Combining beauty with functionality, the Think has a refined appearance that's different from other Steelcase task chairs and adds aesthetic appeal to any workspace.

Cons of Steelcase Think

Starting in the high $600s, Think may cost less than other Steelcase chairs, but it's still more expensive than other office task chairs on the market.

Plus, despite its intuitive features and design, it lacks the value and performance advantages that other Steelcase chairs such as the Gesture or Leap provide.

Lack of Reclining Resistance Adjustment

Some users have reported the lack of a reclining resistance adjustment. Although the Think has stock recline settings, they can be flimsy and too easy to recline.

Overhanging Armrests

According to other reviews, there may be a significant amount of overhang when the armrests are adjusted all the way in, which can break if you apply too much pressure.

Steelcase Think Warranty Information

Steelcase offers a limited global warranty on all products, including the Think chair. Structural elements, such as the seat and armrests, are covered for life.

The mechanisms, arm caps, foam padding, cylinders and casters are covered for 12 years. Depending on the type of upholstery, textiles are covered anywhere from five to 12 years.

Steelcase Think Customization Options

The Think offers several different customizable options, including a task chair and stool version. It also has a wide range of material and finish options:

  • Backrest Options – The Think backrest is available in fabric, leather, or 3D knit material. The 3D knit material is transparent and allows light to pass through the backrest, so it feels lighter.
  • Upholstery Options – The Think is available in six leather options and over 50 fabric colors.
  • Frame Finish Options – The Think has three frame color options: black, seagull, and platinum metallic.
  • Lumbar Support Options – The Think has two lumbar support options: adjustable or fixed. The lumbar support is standard with every new chair unless you choose one of the other options.
  • Base Options – The Think is available in two base options: a frame-matching base or aluminum base.
  • Arm Options – The Think has three arm options: armless, fixed arms, or no arms at all.
  • Additional Options – The Think is also available with glides, an optional coat hanger, and an adjustable headrest.

Is Steelcase Think Right for You?

In the long run, the office chair you choose will depend on several factors, including price, comfort, and customization options. It will also depend on whether you're buying for yourself or your employees.

With more features than the Series 1, Series 2 or the Amia, the Steelcase Think is smart, simple to use, made out of sustainable materials, and designed for people who sit for a living.

If you want a chair that offers the most value, the Think may not be the best option, since it lacks some of the performance advantages and adjustments that the Leap and Gesture provide.

However, if you're looking for an aesthetically pleasing office chair that supports a variety of shapes and sizes with simple adjustments, the Think may be perfect for you.
