5 Smart Design Tips for Your Workspace from Our SILEC Project

Are you a business owner in the process of moving office locations? If so, you may be under a lot of pressure. After all, you're the one responsible for running your business, managing the move and making sure your new space is move-in ready for your employees.

This was the exact case for Southern Illinois Law Enforcement Commission (SILEC) when they decided to move across town and into a former university building in Belleville, Illinois. For their new location, they wanted to create a workspace where their employees love to work

Here at Egyptian Workspace Partners, we know choosing office furniture can be extremely confusing. After all, there are so many different styles, qualities, features and price points to choose from. Unfortunately, this leaves you feeling overwhelmed.

We loved seeing every aspect of this project come to life, from the office furniture and flooring to office supplies and technology. Keep reading to find out how we transformed this former student center into a contemporary, inspiring workspace for SILEC.

5 Smart Design Tips from SILEC

1. Design for Wellbeing with Height-Adjustable Desks

Design for Wellbeing with Height-Adjustable Desks

When you think about all the things that happen outside of work, the workplace is where you should feel supported mentally, physically and spiritually. Spaces that improve how people feel, think and move have been shown to improve performance and health concerns among employees.

Height-adjustable desks allow workers to easily change postures from sitting to standing throughout the day, which can positively impact physical health. They are linked to increased productivity, better concentration and improved overall wellbeing

That's why Steelcase Ology™ desks were incorporated into the space to encourage a more health-conscious environment. L-shape Ology desks were installed in the two large private offices, while Ology desks with straight tops were used in the cubicles.

Ology is designed to promote user movement and wellbeing with two control options. Simple Touch empowers people to effortlessly move the desk up or down without taking their eyes off their work. Active Touch reminds people to change posture with gentle desk motions.

2. Promote Privacy with Low Panels

Promote Privacy with Low Panels

The need for privacy in the workplace is as basic to human nature as is the need to be with others. The harder people work collaboratively, the more important it is to have time alone. Providing privacy options, like solutions for visual and acoustic privacy, helps people concentrate significantly better at work.

This is why Steelcase Answer Panel System was used for cubicles in the main workspace. The panels are covered in an upholstered fabric to assist with sound absorption. At the top of each panel, glass windows were installed to provide further acoustic privacy but also allow for natural light to pass through.

3. Keep Your Workspace Organized with Storage Accessories

Keep Your Workspace Organized with Storage Accessories

Having an organized workspace feels good. And that's just the start. Employees in spaces designed around their specific needs and work styles aren't just happier. They're also more productive. Personal organization tools are perfect for keeping your desk clutter-free while maximizing usable space.

In all cubicles, Steelcase Slat Wall was chosen to help employees stay more organized. Each cubicle has Slat Wall for storage accessories like pencil cups, files and small bins to organize clutter, as well as a slim shelf to store work accessories or even personal belongings.

4. Create Private Offices that Support Collaboration

Create Private Offices that Support Collaboration

Private offices are usually thought of as traditional workspaces where workers get more privacy but less interaction with others. However, this isn't necessarily true. Private offices can also be an easy place for your team to gather, brainstorm and collaborate on ideas.

That's exactly why the client opted for the Steelcase Verlay table. Verlay is minimal in nature, versatile and adds warmth and comfort to any space. With integrated tabletop power and a cable management system, Verlay keeps devices powered up and cords out of the way for easy collaboration

Additionally, Steelcase Reply guest chairs are as nice to look at as they are to sit in. With three Reply chairs at the Verlay table (and one Steelcase Leap chair at the Ology desk), a total of four people can use this private office for informal meetings or impromptu brainstorming sessions.

5. Maximize Real Estate with Modular Walls

Maximize Real Estate with Modular Walls

Traditional drywall construction is very expensive and time-consuming. Not to mention, if you're leasing your workspace, you may be limited on ways to maximize real estate. Fortunately, modular walls are a great alternative to drywall because they are cost-effective and easy to move as your needs change.

We used Steelcase Privacy Wall in this space to create a physical barrier because the client was only leasing half of the suite. Privacy Wall was also installed within the workspace to separate the private offices from the cubicles, so individuals can easily close the sliding doors for privacy.
